Quantum computing: Where we stand & what we aim for

Quantum computing is a key technology with significant strategic and economic potential. Germany has established strong foundations for a competitive ecosystem in recent years and aims to secure a leading position in the global race.

In the 2021 Future Package, €2 billion in federal funding was allocated for the development of quantum computing technologies. The "Action Plan for Quantum Technologies" of 2023 provides a framework for promoting quantum computing technologies through to 2026. Within this framework, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) have allocated over €650 million for funding projects and research contracts to develop quantum computing hardware demonstrators based on six technology platforms.

To keep pace with the rapid global developments, a goal-oriented, flexible, and sustainable funding strategy by the federal government is essential, with a focus on economic applicability. By 2030, Germany aims to hold a leading position in research, development, standardisation, and application of quantum computing, operate with sovereignty, and be recognised globally as an indispensable partner.
