Quantum Stack Stage
In an ambitious endeavor to utilize the power of quantum computing and transform production planning, Pfizer Freiburg, in collaboration with QuantumBasel and D-Wave, embarked on a groundbreaking proof of technology in job shop scheduling. This initiative leverages the computational power of quantum annealing to address complex optimization challenges, as are inherent in job shop scheduling, a critical aspect of manufacturing and production processes.
The project harnessed the capabilities of D-Wave's quantum annealing technology, integrated with QuantumBasel's expertise in developing and applying both quantum and classical algorithms, to optimize production scheduling tasks that were previously deemed intractable with classical computing methods. The quantum annealing solution was compared with classical approaches developed using high-performance computing (HPC). The overall aim of exploring quantum solutions as well as HPC was to optimize complex production planning over all products, process steps, machines and available resources – reducing the planning time for schedulers, increasing machine utilization and production efficiency, minimizing operational costs and enhancing overall productivity.
The success of this initiative is a testament to the robust quantum ecosystem that underpinned the project, fostering a spirit of collaborative innovation. This proof of technology and its promising results not only showcase the practical applications of quantum computing in real-world industrial scenarios but also pave the way for future advancements in the field.
Join us as we delve into the details of this pioneering project and explore the immense potential of quantum algorithms to redefine the art of job shop scheduling and beyond.
