Responsible Quantum Technologies: Why societal aspects should be included now

"We need to move faster, or we’ll lose this race too. We need to achieve technological sovereignty. There will be time for social issues later.”

Such voices are increasingly shaping the German and European discourse on quantum technologies. But is it really wise to postpone responsibility and social issues until later?

This talk critically examines this line of reasoning. While technological sovereignty and international competitiveness are important goals, they alone are not enough. Responsible Quantum Technologies and the early integration of ethical, legal, and societal aspects (ELSA) should not be seen as obstacles to innovation, but rather as prerequisites for sustainable and trustworthy European technology development. In light of current European developments, including the EU Quantum Act, the presentation demonstrates why now is the right time to integrate technological ambition with social responsibility.
