From Quantum Applications to Fundamental Research - and back
The balance of challenges in quantum computing has recently begun to shift: Hardware-engineering problems remain, but algorithms, applications and software have become grand challenges in their own right, especially when value in commercial, industrial and scientific use-cases is supposed to be created. It is not possible to solve these deep research challenges - that do not follow traditional scientific taxonomy - in isolation, but only in the context of concrete application domains. Likewise, only focusing on valuation and applications while ignoring the underlying scientific questions will not lead to fruition.
This leads to a need for slightly unusual interaction between application domains, foundational and applied research. The talk discusses how to address the arising challenges.
