Bitkom on new AI data centres

Berlin, 4 November 2025 – Plans for a new AI data centre are being presented today, Tuesday. Bitkom President Dr Ralf Wintergerst comments as follows:

“Germany needs more data centres for artificial intelligence and cloud computing. High-performance data centres are the fundamental prerequisite for a strong AI location and a digitally sovereign Germany. The construction of a new large data centre in Munich will strengthen Germany as a location for AI and cloud services. Currently, one in four companies uses AI services from the cloud, and the trend is rising sharply: according to a Bitkom study, almost one in two companies will be using AI from the cloud in five years’ time.

For almost all companies (97 per cent), a trustworthy country of origin of the cloud provider plays a central role – and all of them would prefer a provider from Germany. Initiatives and investments by individual companies alone are not enough. Data centre operators need reliable framework conditions, faster approval procedures and, above all, affordable electricity.”
